The statistics of this year's first quarter released by the Maldives Judiciary shows that the majority of unfinished court cases are those filed less than a year ago.
According to the statistics published by the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) encompassing the first two months of 2017, 88 percent of the unfinished court cases were filed less than a year ago. This is an improvement of 11 percent in comparison to last year’s first three months.
Whereas last year there were 1,379 cases pending for over a year at the courts, the amount has been reduced to 961 this year. A total of 6,019 cases were filed during this time out of which 4,562 cases have been concluded. This is 76 percent of the cases.
However, in contrast to last year, the number of unfinished cases have increased by 22 percent. While 6,660 cases were unfinished by the end of the first quarter last year, the number has risen to 8,093 this year.
Moreover, the total number of cases filed within this year has also risen in contrast to last year. During this period of last year, 5,225 cases were filed but this year, 6,019 cases have been filed.
