President Muizzu urges China to reclaim top spot in Maldives tourist arrivals

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has requested China to bolster its efforts to regain its position as the country with the highest number of tourist arrivals to the Maldives.

During his first state visit to China, President Muizzu, in his speech to inaugurate the Maldives Business Forum in Fujian Province, shared the government's vision to boost tourism in the Maldives and increase tourist arrivals.

Sharing the government’s plan to introduce new products and experiences to tourists, the President said that they are exploring ways to promote sports, medical, and cultural tourism besides establishing a top-tier hospitality school.

"China was our [Maldives'] number one market pre-Covid, and it is my request that we intensify efforts for China to regain this position," he said at the forum, which is attended by approximately 300 participants.

After Chinese borders was closed due to the pandemic, tourist arrivals from China to Maldives resumed again in January 2023. By the end of last year, China had climbed to the third spot in the tourist arrival market to the Maldives.

With China suspending travel, the Maldives has received the highest number of tourist arrivals from neighboring India during the last three years.
