Three Deputy Ministers of the Maldives Government have been suspended for derogatory comments made against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over India's decision to expand tourism in Lakshadweep.
Three Deputy Ministers of the Ministry of Youth, Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna and Abdulla Mahzoon Maajid have been suspended in connection with the case.
They were suspended for insulting and criticizing PM Modi over a video he posted promoting tourism in the region during his visit to Lakshadweep last week.
While the government took action against them today, there has been public demand for action stating that their comments have impacted tourism in the Maldives and tarnished the country's reputation.
Several Indians have called for the cancellation of trips to the Maldives, and reports indicate that many have cancelled their bookings to the country.
Currently, the India has highest number of tourist arrivals to the Maldives.
A statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today, said that posts on social media platforms defaming foreign leaders and high-level officials have come to the notice of the government. The statement clarified that such expressions represent personal opinions and not the views of the government.
The government has asserted that it will not hesitate to take action against individuals who show disrespect towards foreign leaders.
