Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef has announced his decision to resign from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and step away from politics.
Shareef, a veteran political figure and long-time member of the Parliament, announced his decision to resign from MDP and withdraw from politics. Shareef made the announcement in a WhatsApp group of MDP parliamentary group members.
However, Shareef did not provide details about the reasons behind his decision.
When asked by 'Mihaaru News', Shareef said that he had stated in the WhatsApp group that he left MDP after a "dispute" in the party's parliamentary group (PG).
"I will leave the party, and I will not be involved in this anymore," Shareef said.
It is learned that Shareef's decision to leave the party was taken as he was not very satisfied with some of the party's internal affairs. However, he did not go into details.
Shareef said that he would not be seen in next year's parliamentary elections.
MDP was the first party that Shareef had joined. He later left MDP and joined former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's DRP (Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party), after which he rejoined the MDP.
