President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu issued a directive on Saturday, December 16, declaring that the national flag of the Maldives would be flown at half-mast for three days in mourning of Kuwait's late Emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jabir Al-Sabah.

President Muizzu declared the Maldives national flag to be flown at half-mast from Sunday, December 17 to Tuesday, December 19, 2023.

The Kuwaiti Emir was of ill-health for an extended period before his demise at the age of 86. Although he was provided emergency medical service in November, Kuwaiti government did not disclose details.

President Muizzu had extended his condolences to the late Emir's family and the Kuwaiti people on Sheikh Nawaf's passing.

In his post on X, President Muizzu said that he was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Sheikh Nawaf. He also highlighted Sheikh Nawaf's efforts in building and expanding bilateral ties between the Maldives and Kuwait.

Meanwhile, Kuwaiti government announced a 40-day period of mourning following Emir Sheikh Nawaf's passing. He will be succeeded by Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jabir Al-Sabah, aged 83, to Kuwait's throne.
