President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is set to participate in the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai. His arrival in the city took place yesterday, accompanied by a high-level delegation from the Maldives, as confirmed by the President's Office.

The visit to Dubai comes following his first official trip to Turkey at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who recently concluded a two-day state visit to the Maldives. This marks President Dr. Muizzu's inaugural international visit since assuming office on November 17th.

During his stay in Dubai, President Dr. Muizzu will be at the COP28 meeting, scheduled for tomorrow. The President's Office emphasizes that this summit provides a valuable platform to share insights into the Maldives' sustainable development plans on the global stage.

In anticipation of the COP Summit, Environment Minister Thorig Ibrahim conveyed to reporters that the Maldives aims to advocate for accessible funds provided by various organizations to combat climate change disasters. Minister Thorig highlighted the challenges faced by small nations like the Maldives due to emissions from developed countries and emphasized the country's commitment to addressing this issue at the summit.

The significance of the COP28 meeting is paramount at a time when the world is assessing progress since the Paris Agreement. The President's Office stressed the importance of the world's first 'global stocktake' (GST) during this summit, providing a comprehensive evaluation of progress since the Paris Agreement's ratification. This evaluation, according to the President's Office, will play a crucial role in accelerating global climate response efforts.
