President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said on Saturday that the true essence of a republic can only be achieved through the collaborative efforts of both the government and the people.
In a video message commemorating the country's 55th Republic Day, Dr. Muizzu extended his heartfelt wishes for the day's celebrations to everyone. He is set to be sworn in as the President of the Maldives on Friday.
In his message, the President-elect expressed gratitude to all the past presidents, cabinet ministers, and political parties whose collective efforts have contributed to bringing the country to its current state as a republic.
"The true 'sweetness' of the republic will be experienced when the government and the public work together, placing the country's priorities at the forefront," he said.
Dr. Muizzu said that the country was in critical need for stability and emphasized the importance of unity, urging everyone to work together as one for the progress of the nation. He called on everyone to move forward in this manner.
The Maldives became a republic in 1968, and Dr. Muizzu will be the eighth president to assume office since then.
