Parliament Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed has issued a warning, to remove members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) from international associations and impose travel bans on them.
A message sent to the parliament MPs' WhatsApp group said that the MDP has contacted the organizers of an international conference, for which Nasheed has already traveled abroad to attend, requesting them to prevent his participation.
In response, Nasheed stated that such actions would only tarnish the reputation of the MDP itself.
Following an MP informing the appointment of Hinnavaru MP Jeehan Mahmood to a position in the Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, Nasheed responded by indicating that members of the ruling party would also be removed from similar positions.
"[PG leader] Aslam, we will remove MDP members from all of these organizations and impose travel bans on them," Nasheed said.
Nasheed stated that the impact of travel bans would be more significant for MDP than its loss in the presidential election.
The hearing on the constitutional lawsuit filed by MDP regarding Nasheed's no-confidence motion has concluded, and the delivery of the verdict is pending.
Despite this, members of MDP believe that Nasheed would persist in intervening in the no-confidence motion against him.
