The Parliament Secretariat has once again cancelled the sitting on the no-confidence motion against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed. The decision for cancellation was made upon receiving notice from Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla that she is still not recovered from her ailments and would not be able to attend today's sitting as well.

Eva has been unable to attend consecutive sittings scheduled by the parliament this week due to suffering from dengue. The sittings were scheduled on the expiration of the notice period of the no-confidence motion submitted against Nasheed by ruling party MDP with a total of 49 signatures.

The Secretariat continues to cancel sittings if Eva is absent as they maintain that the Parliament Regulations stipulate a sitting to confer on a no-confidence motion against the Speaker can only be presided over by the Deputy Speaker.

Rejecting this explanation, MDP has submitted a constitutional case to the Supreme Court seeking a remedy to the obstructions against proceeding the motion in parliament.

MDP's Legal Team is of the view that the Secretary General's decision contravenes Article 82 of the Constitution, as well as Article 44 of the Parliament Regulations.

They also claim that Article 205 (d) of the Parliament Regulations make it clear that no parliamentary work can be allowed to proceed without reaching a decision on a submitted motion of no-confidence against the Speaker.

The Supreme Court has scheduled the first hearing on the case for Monday at 10am.
