Police are investigating the incident to determine if there was any negligence involved in the collision between a speedboat and a traditional boat (Dhoani) near Haa Alifu atoll Ihavandhoo that resulted in the death of a man.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Rasheed Mohamed, a 68-year-old resident of Ihavandhoo.
Rasheed was accompanied by his son, Ali Shareef, at the time of the accident. Shareef has spoken to several media outlets, alleging that the accident was caused by the negligence of the drivers of the speedboat. Additionally, he claimed that the people on the launch did not offer assistance after the accident occurred.
However, the police said that neither the family nor anyone else had filed a complaint alleging negligence in providing assistance after the accident. However, as part of the ongoing investigation into the accident, the police are looking into any negligence on the part of anyone involved.
The boat involved in the incident was a smaller mechanized vessel used for fishing excursions. The vessel had been traveling outside of Huvahandhoo when the speedboat collided and damaged the boat's rear hull where Rasheed was stationed to navigate it.
