The Judicial Services Commission (JSC) has on Tuesday appointed new chief judges for the High Court and the Civil Court.

The newly appointed Chief Judge of the High Court is Judge Hussain Shaheed. Shaheed, who is currently acting chief judge of the High Court, was the only applicant when JSC announced the vacancy of the post.

The position became vacant at the retirement of former Chief Judge of High Court Haathif Hilmy.

Judge Shaheed was appointed to the High Court in 2018. Prior to that, he served as a judge in the Criminal Court and as a magistrate before that.

To the post of Chief Judge at the Civil Court, JSC appointed Judge Mariyam Waheed. She is the first female judge to serve as Chief Judge in the Civil Court.

Along with Mariyam Waheed, Judge Hafiza Abdul Sattar also applied for the post.

The Chief Judge position at Civil Court became vacant following the suddent death of the Court's Chief Judge Ahmed Nimal on the 10th of September.

Judge Mariyam Waheed has also previously served as a magistrate, before being appointed to the Civil Court in 2016. In 2017, Supreme Court issued an order removing her from her post as a Civil Court Judge in response to a verdict she had reached in a case she had presided over. The decision was later rescinded and she was reinstated in 2018.
