The State Trading Organisation (STO) has denied rumors suggesting the company had plans to sign an agreement with a foreign company regarding the import of medicine to the Maldives on Saturday.

During a press conference held by President-elect’s Office, Transitional Spokesperson Mohamed Firuzul said the transitional team had noted that an agreement was being discussed regarding import of medicine from a Tamil Nadu company.

However, signing such an agreement was a matter of concern for the president-elect during this transition period.

“He requests this work to not be taken forward at this period, pause the work,” Firuzul said.

Regarding this statement, STO said in a post on X, the platform previously known as Twitter, that no such agreements as the one indicated by Firuzul was underway.

“We would like to inform everyone that STO is not currently working to sign with any such agreement and no party has ordered this company to stop any such work,” the company said.

This issue has become heated since the President Elect’s Office expressed concerns that services provided by certain hospitals and health centers might have to be halted.

In a press conference held on Monday, Firuzul said stock of medical equipment such as laboratory chemicals and single use syringes are to be imported via special regulations, in order to maintain their stocks. Yet the current administration was not following procedure, he said.

The government, however, denied these claims. Spokesperson at the President's Office, Miuvaan Mohamed, said that even during the Covid-19 crisis, medical supplies were received constantly.

He further stated that the supply of medical equipment will continue without any disruption.
