President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on Friday, October 20, his intention to allocate funds in the state budget to add two additional lifts to every Hiyaa Flat tower.
Dr. Muizzu visited the Hiyaa flats in Hulhumalé 2 and met with the residents there. Vice President-elect Hussain Mohamed Latheef also joined in this meeting.
During the meeting, Dr. Muizzu stated that the new government has been given the opportunity to include their desired allocations in the state budget prepared by the parliament for the next fiscal year. As promised, certain provisions meant for the residents of the Hiyaa Flats have been included in the budget.
"Every tower will receive an additional two lifts. One of the lifts will be large enough to accommodate stretchers, while the other will have the capacity to carry almost 14 people," said the President-elect.
Some of the 16 towers in the 25-storey Hiyaa Flat complex, constructed during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration in Hulhumalé 2, have six lifts, while others have three. However, residents have complained about the insufficient number of lifts to accommodate the approximately 50,000 people living in these flats.
“Therefore, we are guaranteeing that God willing, we will be able to implement what we pledged,” Dr. Muizzu said.
Adding lifts to the Hiyaa towers was a pledge made by Dr. Muizzu during the presidential campaign. He also pledged to reduce the rent of the Hiyaa flats to MVR 5,600.
