As many as 850 people have applied to participate in the training program aimed at waiving fines for traffic violations, the ministry of transport and civil aviation said on Thursday.
State Minister Ali Solih said that preparations were underway to start classes for the program, which is being jointly conducted by the ministry and the police. He further said that the response to the program from the public has been positive, with 850 people having applied so far.
"Now the plan is to start with 65 people in each class. It is a 20-hour training program," he said.
Ali Solih said that the ministry would release additional details about the program in the coming days.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih waived fines for all parking stickers over the past five years ahead of his presidential campaign. The waiver was granted for parking fines imposed between November 17, 2018, and October 5 of this year. However, the decision to waive fines for traffic violations was made only for those participating in a training program dedicated to this purpose.
Therefore, although the penalties for illegal parking stickers were waived, fines for illegal driving will only be waived after the completion of the training program.
According to the ministry of transport's SIMS portal, candidates can apply to participate in the program until October 25. It is a 20-hour training program designed and prescribed by the police to create awareness about traffic rules and other social issues.
Candidates will have to apply for the program through the SIMS portal as well.
