Land reclamation for an additional 63 hectares to Hulhumalé officially commenced today. However, Urbanco has not yet disclosed the project's cost or the expected completion date for the dredging process.

Urbanco, the company responsible for overseeing Hulhumalé, announced in a statement that upon the completion of Hulhumalé phase 3, a number of services will be offered on the new land, similar to those available in the existing phases developed in Hulhumalé.

Urbanco further said that phase 3 will include bridges, parks, and sports and recreational facilities as part of its development.

Additional dredging will be carried out in the entire lagoon area, starting from the western end of the tunnel where the bridges connecting Hulhumalé 1 and 2 are located.

A media official from Urbanco said that the dredging work for Phase 3 is being executed in phases. According to the official, the first phase is expected to be completed within the next two to three weeks.

However, a detailed plan for phase 3 is yet to be finalised by Urbanco.

Urbanco has awarded Hulhumalé phase 3 project to Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company Limited (CMC). The land reclamation of the project is being undertaken by Boskalis.

The government's Binveriyaa scheme is set to allocate land to over 19,000 individuals, with 1,400 plots for allocation in Hulhumalé, which includes Hulhumalé 3, where dredging work has commenced today.

The land reclamation in Hulhumalé was initiated in 1997 during former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's government. Following the reclamation of the first phase, the second phase was dredged in 2014 during the administration of his brother, former President Abdulla Yameen.
