There is no interest that should take precedence over the freedom and sovereignty of the Maldivian people in preserving our independence as a nation, president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated today.
President Solih highlighted that the foundation of Maldivian nationalism is the guidance of the holy religion of Islam, deeply embedded in the hearts of every Maldivian.
In his address on the occasion of National Day, President Solih stated that every citizen's unwavering commitment should be to preserve and defend Maldives' Islamic values, indigenous language, cultural heritage, traditions, and the unique characteristics that unite the nation's independence and sovereignty into a cohesive sense of nationalism.
"No other interest takes precedence over the freedom and sovereignty of Maldivians. Maldives has established its reputation as a dependable and sovereign nation in the international arena," president Solih said.
"Just as political and economic freedom is fully enjoyed, there is no one else who can have a say over the country's domestic and foreign affairs."
He highlighted that the administration's foremost priority continues to be protecting and preserving the independence and sovereignty bequeathed by national hero, al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu.
The President emphasized that the noblest remembrance that brings to mind the memories of National Day is that of the brave national martyrs; the three Utheemu brothers and their companions who took a courageous journey across the ocean to liberate the Maldives from the Portuguese.
