Presidential candidate of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to initiate a cargo ferry to transport the produce of farmers between islands in Haa Dhaalu Atoll during the next term.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Vaikaradhoo, Haa Dhaalu atoll, the president said that Vaikaradhoo and other islands in the area are actively involved in agriculture. However, farmers in the region have been voicing concerns about the absence of a convenient means to transport and sell their produce.

President Solih pledged to bring an end to such complaints by linking the islands through a cargo ferry network that will supply agricultural produce within Haa Dhaalu atoll, similar to the current RTL Ferry network established by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

"What is needed is for the produce [of farmers] to be transported easily while fresh." said president Solih.

"God willing, we will initiate this work with MTCC during the next term and bring hope to farmers. We will ensure they receive a fair compensation for their produce."

The MDP Manifesto specifies the establishment of an export-oriented value chain that will connect Maldivian farmers with local markets, resorts, and international markets. This initiative aims to enhance profits from agricultural produce.

President Solih also said that there would be separate ministries for agriculture and fisheries during the next term and that projects will be formulated in line with the needs of the agricultural industry.
