Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) coalition’s presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged to expedite the causeway project connecting Thaa atoll Veymandoo and neighboring Kinbidhoo.
The opposition coalition’s candidate and Malé City Mayor affirmed that in addition to the causeway, lands from the islands will be reclaimed for developmental projects.
Dr. Muizzu made the statements during his campaign visit to Thaa atoll Veymandoo. At the campaign rally in Veymandoo, he noted that the causeway project was a crucial pledge of former president Abdulla Yameen during the 2018 election. Dr. Muizzu said that the same policy was adopted by him and assured the project will proceed accordingly.
Dr. Muizzu regarded the land reclamation projects on both islands, which are planned to follow the causeway project, as investments rather than expenditures.
“There will be sufficient options to benefit from [after land reclamation]. We can commence economic and housing initiatives to address the difficulties,” Dr. Muizzu said.
Dr. Muizzu also pledged to improve the island's roads by laying asphalt. He highlighted the current condition of the roads, which tend to flood with puddles after rain. Additionally, he promised to develop a modern harbor on the island.
The current government had repossessed the uninhabited island in between Veymandoo and Kinbidhoo for the causeway project.
