President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s running mate for the 2023 presidential election, Mohamed Aslam has assured appropriate development of Giraavaru lagoon.

While the current government recently allotted plots and housing units from Hulhumalé, Gulhifalhu and Giraavaru Lagoon under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ and ‘Binveriyaa’ schemes, Aslam affirmed that the lagoon would undergo complete reclamation to enable recipients to construct their properties.

Aslam urged the public not to lose hope, emphasizing that many past administrations had overlooked housing initiatives in the Malé region because of the necessity for land reclamation. He highlighted that the current government had initiated such efforts to address this issue.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) running mate highlighted the benefits for the Binveriyaa scheme recipients who were awarded plots in Giraavaru lagoon and Gulhifalhu.

“The place [Giraavaru] will be planned better than Hulhumalé. It would be a far superior plan compared to a 20-year plan. There is no need to worry,” Aslam said.

Aslam also said that while the previous governments hesitated on addressing housing issues in Malé region, the current government has resolve it. He added that the government’s efforts to ensure affordable living in the Malé region will enhance the livelihood of every Maldivian citizen.

According to Aslam, the significant support for the current government was mainly due to its ability in addressing housing concerns faced by the locals.

He went on to emphasize that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) was established with the primary goal of reforming the Maldives and improving the quality of life for Maldivians, which remains as a core principle of the party and the current administration. He also criticized the recent exits from the ruling party, adding that such actions will not hinder MDP’s efforts for a progressive Maldives.

“The ideals of MDP have not changed. The ideals that split from us were a hidden agenda, and not ours. MDP has continued work under its original principles to ensure better living for Maldivians,” Aslam said.
