Presidential candidate of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih reflected on his personal experiences growing up in Lhaviyani atoll Hinnavaru.

He emphasized that his decision to run for a second term is rooted in a deep understanding of the needs and challenges faced by the people.

During a campaign rally in his home island of Hinnavaru, president Solih recalled the challenges he faced while living on the island. He highlighted the lack of access to clean drinking water, inadequate sewerage systems, and limited transportation options to and from the island.

The president said that the islands in Faadhippolhu including Hinnavaru and Naifaru has produced competent professionals such as doctors, engineers and captains. He said these people migrated to Malé due to the challenges of living on their home island.

"Why is this island so challenging to live on?" president Solih asked.

Using Hinnavaru as an example president Solih pointed out that despite the island's population exceeding 5,000 people, only 2,000 of them currently live on the island. He said that the main reason for this was the limited space available for establishing a livelihood on the island.

"When most houses are divided, an individual does not even get 100 square feet. If we divided the area of my own house, each child will not get even 200 square feet," said the president, highlighting the negligence of previous governments.

According to president Solih, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is committed to changing the situation and bring back the days when people can build happy and comfortable lives in their home island.

"Developing these places would ease the burden on Malé. This is the major change we are trying to bring about," he said.

President Solih said that he knew the needs of the people well because of his own memories and experiences.

"We are working with full knowledge of what the people want," said president Solih who assured the people of eliminating differences and easier lifestyles if the current government is given the opportunity to continue implementing its policies for a second term.

During his speech, President Solih made new pledges for Hinnavaru. These pledges include further land reclamation for the island, the construction of an additional 200 housing units or row houses, the establishment of a sports complex, the construction of administration buildings, and classrooms needed by the island school, among other significant changes pledged by president Solih

According to president Solih, all islands from the north to the south of the Maldives will be developed if he was given the opportunity for a second term in office.
