The Maldives Corrections Service has transferred more than 200 prisoners from Malé Prison to various other facilities prior to the opening of Dharumavantha School on the adjoining property. Currently, only 20 inmates are still housed in the facility.
The Human Rights Commission had previously determined that the prison was not suitable to be used as a remand center. As a result, a decision was reached to relocate the inmates and repurpose the space for a multipurpose center adjoining Dharumavantha School. The remand center opened in September 2003 on Boduthakurufaanu Magu.
According to Corrections Media Officer, Aminath Yusreen Ahmed, 200 inmates have successfully been transferred from Malé Prison to Hulhumalé Prison, Maafushi Prison, and Himmafushi Prison.
"The remaining 20 prisoners are in the process of being transferred to other jails. We are working to complete the transfer as soon as possible, but we do not have a specific timeline for its completion," she said.

The newly constructed building of Dharumavantha School, situated on an empty plot opposite Villa College, resumed classes on Sunday, August 6. The school is equipped with 41 classrooms and is designed to cater to over a thousand students. Additionally, the facility includes a two-story library, serving both primary and secondary students.
