The Clemency Board on Monday released a woman who was sentenced to five years for attacking a policeman during a major opposition rally in May 2015.

The Criminal Court sentenced Nasira Ali to five years in jail last year for striking a fallen policeman with a bottle during main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s May Day protest two years ago. She was released by the Clemency Board under strict conditions that should she commit any other criminal offences during the remainder of her sentence period, she would be arrested again.

Nasira had been detained since her arrest during the rally until the Criminal Court’s verdict last year. Hence, her detention accounts for part of her jail sentence.

The Criminal Court had also convicted a number of other protestors for offences committed during the May Day rally. Most of the defendants are currently undergoing the appeal process of their cases.

The Clemency Board was constituted in accordance with the Clemency Act of the Maldives.
