The Maldives National University (MNU) lecturer, Ali Hafeez, who was recently involved in a serious hit-and-run accident in Malé City, has received assistance to arrange an air ambulance to take him abroad for medical care.
Hafeez was leaving the mosque on June 28 after finishing the early morning Fajr prayer when he was struck by a motorcyclist who was traveling at dangerously high speed.
Hafeez's condition remains critical since he was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at ADK Hospital. Due to his critical condition, it is not feasible to transport him overseas for medical treatment using regular commercial airlines.
Following his accident, Hafeez's family and friends initiated efforts to secure an air ambulance to transfer him to India for medical treatment. A close friend of Hafeez took to social media to share their efforts to arrange an air ambulance for the journey.
The post said that Hafeez's family members, friends, colleagues from MNU, students, the general public, and the government have contributed to raising the required funds for his medical transportation.
While the lecturer, who has an impressive 18-year career in education, remains in critical condition, the Maldives Police Service has reported that the alleged perpetrator of the hit and run has been arrested.
Police said that the biker, aged 22, did not possess a driver’s license and was arrested through a court order.
