Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir has re-joined the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

His registration as a member of MDP was officially accepted by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at a ceremony held in Salt Cafe & Restaurant yesterday.

President Solih described Jabir's membership as a significant progress for MDP and expressed his hope for the MP's support in the upcoming presidential election. He said that MP Jabir is a leader for the youth.

With MP Jabir's return as an official member of the ruling party, MDP will have a total of 54 members representing them in the parliament.

"I was always with MDP, and those who did not wish for me to remain in the party back then are now no longer with the party. Since I wish for President Solih to succeed for a second term, I returned to offer my support," MP Jabir said.

"I am certain that [the President] will win this election, and I assure to work for that to the best of my ability," the MP said.

Earlier, MP Jabir had made efforts to register a new political party called the "Green Party" after the dissolution of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP). Although he received permission to register the new party, he ultimately decided not to proceed with it and instead opted to rejoin MDP.

MDP's Chairperson and Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail had extended the invitation for MP Jabir to join the party. In response, parliament's Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla criticized the party, and said that MP Jabir is next to lead MDP.

In response to the criticism, Chairperson Fayyaz said that the "Gen Z" supports MP Jabir and emphasized that the party welcomed everyone. He added that anyone, regardless of their birth island or family background, has the opportunity to reach the top leadership positions within MDP.
