Opposition lawmakers have decided to enter the parliament even though parliament will be closed on Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference held by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC)'s parliamentary group in front of the entrance to the parliament, MP Mohamed Saeed stated that the parliament cannot be locked, and the current halt in sittings is due to the opposition's intention to address concerns regarding government influence.

MP Saeed said that the government's motive for keeping the parliament closed is to impede the work of the Judiciary Committee and interfere with the functioning of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

"We're going to enter the parliament. We have informed the Secretary General here that regardless of whether it is locked, our opposition parties intend to enter the parliament," Saeed said.

Vice President of PPM and Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam said that the government is reluctant to proceed with the no-confidence motion concerning the Maldives-Mauritius case filed by the opposition.

He expressed the opposition's belief that the government deliberately closed the parliament, aligning with the statement made by Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed regarding this issue.

As Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla is currently unavailable to assume the role of Speaker, the parliamentary sittings have been presided over by Vilufushi MP Hassan Afeef for the past three sessions. However, according to parliamentary regulations, in the absence of both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, another member can preside over three consecutive sittings.

Nasheed said at a press conference on Monday that he did not believe that the parliament could proceed further.

However Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which holds the majority seats, says they can still go forward with parliament sittings.
