Development of a Transport Master Plan for Malé area underway

The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has announced that a Master Plan on Transport for the Malé area will be developed as part of the “Integrated Sustainable and Low Emission Transport in the Maldives” project conducted by the Ministry.

The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has announced that a Master Plan on Transport for the Malé area will be developed as part of the “Integrated Sustainable and Low Emission Transport in the Maldives” project conducted by the Ministry.

The plan will be funded through the Global Environment Facility (GEF) according to the Ministry.

The announcement made by the Ministry of Environment stated that it is seeking consultancy services for the development of an “Integrated Transport Master Plan for Malé Urban Area”. Interested parties are required to submit their proposals before July 9.

According to the information sheet published by the Ministry, the main objective of this 10 year Master Plan is to determine the extent of usage of environmentally friendly vehicles in the Malé region, and develop strategies to encourage people to use such vehicles.

The plan will also include strategies aimed at reducing traffic congestion and strengthening public transport. Reduction of vehicles, and solutions to major transport related issues such as lack of parking spaces will be addressed through the plan.

Traffic congestion stands as one of the most pressing issues in the Malé area.
