Supporters of Parliament Speaker and Maldives Democratic Party' (MDP) President Mohamed Nasheed decided on Wednesday to register "The Democrats" as a political party with the Election Commission (EC) on Thursday June 1.
EC granted them permission to establish a new political party on Wednesday. The registration process for a party requires a minimum of 3,000 signatures.
The Democrats said they will be submiting the membership forms to the EC today.
The to-be-formed party has requested all members to bring the membership forms to Galolhu Bodufenvalhuge before 11 pm on Wednesday.
"Fikuregge Dhirun," meaning "Reviving an Ideology," started initially as a faction of MDP, was submitted to be registered under the name of former Chairperson of MDP, and current West Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef.
Twelve parliamentarians resigned from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on May 12 to establish a new political party. During a press conference, the MPs expressed their belief that MDP had deviated from its original purpose and the principles of democracy it once advocated. They said that the party had been hijacked to serve the interests of a specific group and their intention in forming a new party is to revive and uphold the original philosophy of MDP.
They had previously announced plans to field a candidate in the upcoming presidential elections in September.
