The Maldives government has filed a case against former Maldives Vice President Ahmed Adeeb seeking compensation of MVR 2 million that was ordered to be paid by him in connection to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scandal.

Maldives Criminal Court in 2020 ordered a 20-year jail term with an additional fine of MVR 2 million from Adeeb under the confession agreement. Adeeb however, has not paid the fine within the agreed timeframe.

The case against Adeeb has been filed by the Attorney General’s Office with the Civil Court, and it is still awaiting a verdict.

Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in prison after confessing and pleading guilty to all seven charges brought against him by the state. He will serve a 19-year term after the period of his remand is deducted.

Although Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in jail by the Criminal Court, he is currently serving time under house arrest.
