Maldives signs four key agreements with Serbia

The Maldives government signed four key agreements with the government of Serbia on Tuesday, May 09.

The agreements were signed during the official visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid, to Serbia. The four key agreements signed were:

1- Agreement between the governments of Maldives and Serbia on trade, investment and economic cooperation

2- Air services agreement between the governments

3- Memorandum of Understanding between the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on cooperation in the field of diplomatic education

4- A memorandum of Understanding to strengthen relations between the two countries in the field of sports

In a tweet, Minister Shahid said that the air services agreement signed by the governments of Maldives and Serbia will “not only allow direct flights between our countries but will also increase people-to-people ties between the Maldives and Serbia” and assist in boosting the Maldivian tourism sector.

Regarding the MoU signed between the countries on cooperation in diplomatic education, the Minister said that it will further enhance the knowledge and skills of diplomats of both countries and will provide an “excellent platform for the exchange of expertise”.

He also mentioned that the MoU signed between the countries on cooperation in sports would provide new opportunities for Maldivian athletes to train and gain experience in Serbia.

The Minister said that the agreement on trade, investment, and economic cooperation will improve Maldives' economic security and provide access to new markets for Maldivian exports. Additionally, he emphasized that the agreement will increase investment from Serbia in the Maldives.

During his trip, Minister Shahid had a met with the Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dačić. He also made a courtesy visit to the Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on Wednesday, May 10.

During the meeting with the Serbian Foreign Minister, the two extensively discussed human resource development, sports cooperation, promoting trade ties and tourism, and multilateral cooperation, according to Minister Shahid.

The Minister expressed his hope that the agreements signed will not only strengthen cooperation in sports, trade, and people-to-people connections, but also strengthen bilateral ties between Maldives and Serbia.
