Malé City Mayor and Vice President of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has denied allegations that he is attempting to take over the party's senate.

He denied these allegations during a press conference held on Thursday morning to discuss the council's ongoing projects.

When a journalist repeatedly asked if Muizzu was offering employment opportunities to PPM members in an effort to gain control of the senate, he denied any such attempts.

"I am not a person who works according to gossip or rumors. I would not do anything that compromises my professional values. Even if people talk, it doesn't necessarily mean it's true," Muizzu said.

The council has been accused of hiring consultants with the intention of hiring PPM members, but the council denied these allegations and said that they do not consider political parties during the recruitment process. Currently, the council has 13 consultants that they work with, according to information the council had shared with Mihaaru News.

Although Muizzu denied attempting to overtake the senate, City Council member Adam Riyaz, recently resigned from the party after receiving a summons to the party's disciplinary committee on accusations of campaigning for Muizzu.

With time running short for this year's presidential election scheduled for September 9, rumors suggest that members of the opposition coalition have differences in opinions on how to proceed, given that their presidential candidate, former President Abdulla Yameen, is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence. However, the PPM has reassured that Yameen will be released and allowed to run in the election.
