The parliament has decided to summon the national task force on the H1N1 virus epidemic to the Committee on Oversight of the Government on Wednesday night.
Member of the opposition coalition and lawmaker of Kinbidhoo constituency Abdulla Riyaz had requested the oversight committee on March 15 to look into what is being done by the state to curb the swine flu epidemic currently spreading across the Maldives.
All members of the committee that debated on the request had unanimously agreed to look into the status of swine flu in the nation.
Committee member Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam also proposed to summon top officials of the ministries of health and education in addition to the task force. However, the committee has so far agreed only on bringing in the task force.
The latest report released by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) shows that 546 people have tested for the H1N1 virus out of which 199 tested positive. To date, six people have died of swine flu.
The government had closed all schools and universities last week due to the swine flu risk. Though classes resumed on Sunday and Monday, the state has closed schools again for the remainder of this week due to the dismally low turnout of students.
