With the exception of criminal cases, the number of cases decided by the courts last year have decreased.
According to the judicial annual report released by the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) last year, 17,313 cases were decided by the courts in 2022. This is a 12 percent decrease compared with the number of cases decided in 2021.
The report also showed an increase in the number of criminal cases decided. Criminal Court, Juvenile Court, Drug Courts, and Magistrate Courts saw a 10 percent increase in cases decided, resulting in a 19 percent increase in the case clearance rate.
However, there are still 274 criminal cases pending, some of which are over five years old.
According to the report, the number of cases decided by the Supreme Court fell by 29 percent compared to 2021, while the number of cases decided by the High Court fell by 31 percent.
While the number of civil cases decided fell by seven percent compared to 2021, the number of family cases filed and decided also decreased last year. Over a thousand family cases are still pending in the courts.
