A child in Addu City has tested positive for measles, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) confirmed on Monday.

Measles was eradicated from the Maldives in 2018; however, there were a few reported cases in early 2020.

Another child who potentially contracted the disease has also been identified, and samples are being taken for confirmation, HPA said.

According to the agency, the incubation period for the child who tested positive for measles has passed, and there is no danger of the disease spreading.

HPA is working with Addu Equatorial Hospital to identify the contacts and the cause of the disease.

The vaccine for measles will also be administered to those who need it very soon, the HPA said.

Symptoms of measles:

- Fever

- Rashes on the skin

- Coughing

- Runny nose

- Red eyes

If any of these symptoms are present, the HPA recommends seeking medical assistance immediately.
