Mental health crisis deepens in Maldives, with increasing cases in atolls

The Ministry of Gender and Family has said that in addition to the cases reported in the capital, Malé, their latest statistics indicate that there is an increase in the number of people with mental illnesses in the atolls as well.

Last Friday, a 25-year-old man was found dead in the lagoon of Gaafu Alifu Kanduhulhudhoo. Reportedly, he was a mental health patient who had been seeking treatment for his condition for over a year and was also under the supervision of the gender ministry. The death of the young man highlighted the severity of the mental health crisis in the Maldives.
