The CEO of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Adam Azim, on Thursday decided to leave the Jumhooree Party (JP) and back President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the upcoming presidential election.

Earlier today, JP's leader, Qasim Ibrahim, announced that he would be contesting in the election on behalf of the party. The party intends to form a coalition for the election, led by Qasim.

In a letter Azim sent to Qasim, he said that it was in the best interest of the people as well as the nation to ensure that President Solih wins a second term in office. Therefore, he does not believe remaining in the position of special advisor to the party leader would be ideal, the letter said.

Azim was appointed as MTCC's CEO in a JP slot. However, as of recently, he has not been seen in any of the party activities. At the JP National Conference held last month, his re-appointment as an advisor was not announced either.

There are several high-ranking Jumhooree Party officials still in the government.

However, the President's Office this week began sacking senior MDP members in the government who openly defied President Solih and expressed support for former president and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed's faction within MDP.

Earlier this week, State Trading Organisation (STO) Managing Director Hussain Amr was dismissed from his post; yesterday, Minister at the President's Office Mohamed Shifaz was removed from his post, too. Both of these MDP members are avid supporters of Nasheed and campaigned for him in the MDP's presidential primary held in January.
