Mohamed Shifaz, a Minister at the President's Office, has been dismissed from his post.

The Spokesperson at the President's Office, Mohamed Miuwan, confirmed his dismissal on Wednesday.

Shifaz was appointed to the post on November 22, 2018, the same month President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih assumed office.

While Shifaz was dismissed today, there were allegedly concerns about him not attending work on a daily basis.

Shifaz is the Vice President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and an avid supporter of former president and current Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed. He is a key figure in Nasheed's "Fikkurege Dhirun" (meaning "reviving an ideology") faction within MDP and actively campaigned for him in MDP's primary election held in January.

After Nasheed lost the election, he criticised the government's policies and alleged that the pledges made in the MDP manifesto were not being fulfilled by the coalition government led by President Solih.

A lot of the incumbent President's supporters raised concern because Shifaz was allowed to remain in his post at the President's Office after being vocal against the administration's policies.

On Sunday, Hussain Amr, the Managing Director of the State Trading Organisation (STO), was also sacked. He is also a prominent member of Nasheed's faction within the MDP.
