More than 4,000 people have applied for the 1,000 housing plots that were opened up in four wards of Addu City.

Addu City Council announced the lease of land for housing purposes from Hithadhoo, Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo in January. The deadline for applications closed last month.

Ten percent of the applications were allocated for citizens from other wards in the city; these citizens were grouped as Category B.

According to Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar, a total of 4,134 people had applied by the deadline. The forms are currently being processed.

Nizar said that the largest number of applications were for land in Hithadhoo ward. Five hundred plots of 1,500 square feet were announced, and a total of 2,198 people from Hithadhoo applied for them. An additional 300 forms from Category B were also received for the Hithadhoo plots.

From Meedhoo ward, 100 plots of 2,000 square feet were announced; 272 from the ward applied, and 35 from Category B applied.

From Feydhoo ward, 300 plots of 1,500 square feet were announced; 887 natives applied, and 181 individuals from Category B submitted their applications.

From Hulhudhoo ward, 100 plots of 2,000 square feet were announced; 230 people from the ward applied, and 31 from Category B had applied.

The forms will be evaluated by an independent committee comprised of individuals from all wards of the city. Once the evaluation is completed, the land will be handed over in June, Nizar said.
