Former President Abdulla Yameen's legal team on Monday filed an appeal at the High Court against the order to pay USD 3.4 million (MVR 52 million) to the state in connection with his conviction in the Vaavu atoll Aarah case.
Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison and fined USD 5 million for accepting and laundering USD 1 million in bribes from the lease of Vaavu atoll Aarah.
The Criminal Court last month ordered Yameen to pay the USD 3.4 million laundered in the case within six months.
A decision has yet to be made on whether the court will accept the case.
While Yameen's lawyers had also appealed his jail sentence, the High Court had ordered some aspects of the case to be amended.
The Criminal Court had earlier sentenced Yameen to five years in prison in 2019 in the Gaaf Alifu atoll Vodamulaa lease case. The case is currently pending in the Criminal Court.
