Malé City Council has begun installing smart streetlights on the streets of Malé on Monday.
The street lights were donated by China's Yunnan Province, according to the council.
The project was inaugurated by Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Head of Delegation Ma Zuoxin on behalf of Yunnan Province at a ceremony held at the Artificial Beach area yesterday evening.
The ceremony was also attended by the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives H.E. Wang Lixin.
The city council said 10 smart streetlight poles have been installed from the Artificial Beach area to Lonuziyaarai Park. The lights will be installed first on the main streets of the city, and then more lights will be installed on other roads.
- Free Wi-Fi
- Digital LED screen
- Speaker system
- CCTV cameras
- Environmental sensor to detect weather changes
Mayor Muizzu said the purpose of the streetlights is to convey public messages needed by the council, important messages for the community, religious guidance, advice, and duas. A regulation will be passed to allow advertising on a commercial basis.
He said the city council would have full control over the CCTV cameras, which will be monitored through the city council's CCTV monitoring system. The footage recorded by the CCTV cameras will be shared with the police when required.
The Mayor thanked China's Yunnan Province, the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Governor for their assistance.
"This arrangement was possible because of the close relationship between the two cities. They have been very supportive of Malé city in the past," he said.
According to the city council, the "Smart Streetlight" project is part of the "Digital Malé City" project of the council's strategic action plan for its fourth term.
