Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) warned legal action against its former member and lawmaker of Dhiggaru constituency, Faris Maumoon, for “conducting low acts” in the name of the ruling party.

PPM released its statement against MP Faris for representing the ruling party at a joint press conference held Wednesday by opposition political parties regarding the impending motion of no confidence against parliamentary speaker Abdulla Maseeh.

The ruling party condemned the act of MP Faris representing PPM, declaring that only the party’s advisor, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, or an entity appointed by the president may represent PPM at events, activities and forums. The Maldives’ judiciary had handed over PPM’s control from its leader, Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, to President Yameen following the political fall-out between the two half-brothers.

In its statement, PPM proclaimed that MP Faris’ use of the party’s flag and logo in manners that besmirch the party’s name is a low act that infringes the rights of PPM members.

The party went on to describe the opposition leadership as individuals that actively sully the Maldives’ image to the outside world, conduct activities that are damaging to the nation, spout religious heresy, and work to incite dispute among the public.

“Certainly no citizen of the Maldives would wish to share a table with [such people],”said the party.

PPM ended its statement warning that it is mulling legal action against MP Faris and other individuals with such codes of conduct.

MP Faris Maumoon was expelled from PPM for going against PPM parliamentary group’s three line whip. He is backing his father, Former President Maumoon, in the dispute between Maumoon and President Yameen which split the ruling party into two factions. MP Faris is also the lawmaker that spearheaded the motion of no confidence against parliamentary speaker Abdulla Maseeh, which is scheduled for debate coming Monday.
