Jumhooree Party elects Qasim as leader again

Qasim Ibrahim has been elected as the Jumhooree Party’s leader at the ongoing 4th National Conference of the Jumhooree Party.

Qasim Ibrahim has been elected as the Jumhooree Party’s leader at the ongoing 4th National Conference of the Jumhooree Party.

Qasim was the sole nominee for the post when the application deadline closed on February 18.

The Jumhooree Party is the Maldives' third-largest political party.Qasim has been its leader since it was formed.

The conference, which is being held at Dharubaaruge, commenced on Friday. The party members will be voting on amendments to the party regulations and other important matters, including electing people to the vacant posts in the party.

A decision regarding the presidential election slated for September 9 will also be made at this conference. While the party members have expressed their wish for Qasim to contest in this election, the matter is yet to be decided.

The Jumhooree Party is currently part of the ruling coalition led by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). MDP’s presidential candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, has invited the party to remain with the coalition.
