An amendment to the Presidential Election Act has been proposed to extend the nomination period for the upcoming presidential elections in September. The amendment was submitted by Kela MP Ibrahim Shareef on behalf of the government.

According to the law, those wishing to contest the presidential election must be given at least 10 days to submit their applications to the Election Commission (EC).

The government has proposed a 14 day extension to this deadline.

The Election Commission has scheduled this year's presidential election for September 9, with a second round of voting to be held on September 30 if necessary.

However, EC has noted that if there are any changes to the legal dates, the dates of the elections may also change accordingly.
