Qasim Ibrahim has put forward his name for the post of Jumhooree Party’s leader, the party’s spokesperson Ali Solih confirmed on Saturday.
According to Solih, Qasim was the only candidate nominated for the post when the deadline closed today at 12 p.m. However, according to the party’s regulations, a vote must still be taken to make a formal appointment.
This is the fourth time Qasim is contesting this post.
Solih said that Qasim’s wife and Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula Ali and Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Ahmed Hussain had put forward their names for the post of the party’s Deputy Leader.
The appointments for these posts will be made at the Jumhooree Party’s national congress, scheduled to be held on February 24–25.
The party regulations also state that its leader shall be the presidential candidate nominated by the party. The leader is elected for a five-year term.
