The Maldives Police Service on Thursday revealed that over a kilogram of drugs were retrieved from the Latvian man who was arrested for drug smuggling.
The 46-year-old drug mule attempted to smuggle the drugs into the country by ingesting them. He was arrested earlier this week, with the assistance of Maldives Immigration, based on intelligence reports they received.
The police said they were able to retrieve 127 balloons containing illicit substances from his body. The drugs weighed a total of 1.3 kilograms. They did not reveal the type of drug.
The Criminal Court has already remanded him for 15 days while the investigation is ongoing, the police said.
In these circumstances, the police have previously taken the culprits to the hospital to retrieve the drugs, or they keep them in guesthouses until they pass the drugs naturally.
