The Elections Commission (EC) has said the official date for the presidential election will be announced on January 15.

The Vice President of the EC, Ismail Habeeb said that it will be held in early September.

"We’re aiming to hold the first round [of elections] in early September. We’ll hold a press conference on the 15th to announce an official date," Habeeb said.

Habeeb said that details, including the deadline for candidates to file their candidatures and the opening date for voter registration, will also be announced at the press conference on January 15. He also said that the EC will be preparing for a run-off round.

According to the Maldives Constitution, a second round of voting is required if no candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote.

In the last presidential election held on September 23, 2018, a second round of voting was not required as only two candidates competed; incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and former President Abdulla Yameen, who was seeking re-election for a second term.
