The grounds of the national radio station "Dhivehi-Raajjeyge Adu" will be used as the main hub for the presidential election in 2023, the Elections Commission (EC) revealed on Tuesday.

The Vice President of the EC, Ismail Habeeb, told Mihaaru that the Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure has already requested that space be made available in the building located at the end of Ameenee Magu in the capital Malé.

"Dhivehi-Raajjeyge Adu" has also confirmed that it would provide a space for a fee, Habeeb said. "They said the space would be provided by the 15th of next month."

In recent elections, Jamaluddin School’s old building was used as the EC’s main hub, but the structure is being demolished to construct the new Arabiyyaa School.

The EC previously stated that the date for the upcoming presidential election would be announced in December. However, it was unable to do so as the President of the Commission, Fuwad Thowfeek, is currently on emergency leave.

Habeeb assured that the official date for the 2023 presidential election will be announced in January.

The parliament has already approved a budget of MVR 90 million from the state budget for the upcoming election. However, the EC estimates that another MVR 30 million will be needed for a run-off election.
