The government has decided to build a special center for the elderly in Addu City.

The main purpose of the Elderly Home, which will be built for the first time in the Maldives, is to protect the rights of the elderly.

According to Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services, the purpose of an "elderly home" is to offer an independent setting and a suitable environment for the care of the elderly who are placed under government care for various reasons.

Those seeking the centers service are divided into three groups. Which are:

- People who want to use the service on their own (private residents)

- Elderly people in need of assistance and care

- As a 'day dare' for the elderly being cared for at home, to facilitate their caregivers to work

The Elderly village will be established on a public-private partnership.

Currently, people who have no one to care for them are being looked after at the state-run Centre in Kaafu atoll Guraidhoo.
