The Chinese government encourages its enterprises to invest in the Maldives, the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Wang Lixin, stated on Wednesday.

The Ambassador made the remark at the Business Forum held as part of the “Belt and Road” initiative between China and Maldives.

Lixin highlighted the importance of effectively conducting the Tripartite Coordinating Mechanism Meetings.

Earlier in September 2022, Maldives and China held the tripartite coordinating mechanism meeting on the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative to ensure the flow of information between the countries, and to resolve issues faced by Chinese enterprises. The Ambassador said that the meeting ended with the parties achieving good results.

Speaking at the forum, Lixin emphasised the immediate need to enhance docking of the Maldives Economic Diversification Strategy with Global Development Initiative.

Lixin also spoke about deepening practical cooperation between the countries. Earlier in January 2022, Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi paid an official visit to Maldives during which the countries signed a series of cooperation arrangements. The relevant projects signed under the arrangements are under steady implementation, Lixin confirmed.

The projects include Management and Maintenance of China-Maldives Friendship Bridge which is currently underway, installation of seawater desalination equipment on five islands is also ongoing with active use of them expected soon.

Additionally, Hulhumalé Hospital’s ophthalmology centre is expected to reopen, with Chinese doctors and nurses returning to the Maldives soon.

The Business forum was attended by high-level dignitaries of the countries which had included Maldives Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail, flanked by representatives of various economic institutions and major corporations.
