The first Maldivian law society has been introduced in Villa College.
The society, officially inaugurated on Thursday, October 20 aims to create responsible legal advocates that are of sound legal knowledge. Moreover, the society will focus on providing relevant training to law students at the college, provide practical experiences and facilitate career opportunities for them.
According to the society, it will work closely with various associations in the field, government bodies and law firms to promote legal awareness among the public. Additional to this, the society will take up pro bono works to ensure sustained protection of basic civil rights.
Opportunity to participate in the law society is applicable for all law students in Villa College. All legal sector bodies, firms and companies will have the opportunity to collaborate with the society for legal initiatives.
The law society confirms receiving opportunity to work with Public Interest Law Center (PILC), the two will work together to facilitate practical experiences, while the society's students will receive opportunity to partake in various awareness camps run by the center.
Opening of Villa College's Law Society was officiated by the current president of Maldives Bar Council Ismail Wisham. Apart from Bar Council's president, the inauguration was attended by Supreme Court judge, Justice Dr. Azmiralda Zahir.
Members of the society took oath to ensure community empowerment, uphold the law, increase legal awareness and serve the society. The members were sworn in by Dr. Azmiralda.
Bar Council president Wisham urged the society's members to remain committed to their cause. He also encouraged the society to ensure preservation of public rights and interests.
