Maldives Meteorological Service forecasts rainy weather, in addition to rough seas and strong winds for northern and central Maldives for the next five days.

According to Mihaaru news, an official from the national meteorological service had said on Sunday that even though the weather may improve on Tuesday, the weather will return to being rainy around Thursday again.

They have forecasted that the weather will start to improve completely around Friday.

According to the official, the increased rainfall was due to a circulation in south-west area of the equator, which is now nearing the atolls in south-west Maldives. They have forecasted wind speeds up to 50 miles per hour prior to rainfall in current conditions.

As strong winds leads to rough seas, MET has urged to ensure to practice safe sea travel.

MET has forecasted that there will be widespread rain in Maldives throughout Monday, with few heavy showers and thunderstorms.

Highest rainfall recorded in central Maldives

The national weather service said on their Viber channel used to provide weather updates that as per the 24 hour accumulated rainfall, the highest rainfall within the past 24 hours was recorded in the central area.

A maximum of 147 mm of rain was recorded in Alif Alif Thoddoo Automatic Weather Station. This was followed by Hulhule, which recorded a total of 139.4 mm of rain for the same period.

The heaviest rainfall recorded within a 24 hour period in Maldives was on November 24, 2015, with a total of 228 mm in Addu City.

The continuous heavy rain had lead to severe flooding of Male’ roads as well last night. Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) had started to work with Fire and Rescue, in order to reduce the flooding in Male’ roads.
